‘Tell Me’ by Ethan French.

With chord progressions that evoke powerful feelings Ethan French put his keys in focus delivering an emotional R&B gem.

  • Please introduce yourself

My name is Ethan French, I’m a songwriter/composer and multi-instrumentalist from Western Australia. I sing, play piano, guitar and various other instruments when I need to; mostly when making recordings from the music room at home. I’m currently 19 years old and studying composition at WAAPA (Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts).

  • Describe your sound in 3 words

I don’t know! Describing my sound has always been something I’ve struggled with… I’ve heard people go as far as jazz but I’m not sure I’d agree with that classification.

  • Who is your favourite Pianist?

I’d have to go with Jacob Collier – chances are I’m going to mention that name a few times. Such tasteful and sophisticated playing; and not just the piano, either.

  • Do you like the idea of collaborating? Is songwriting a lonely process?

Of course, collaborating is something I would love to pursue in the future. Although for me songwriting has typically been a lonely process, especially as someone who would describe themselves for the most part as a musical control-freak (not that I ever am 100% satisfied with the final product). Perhaps I just haven’t found the right collaborator yet…

  • What would be your dream performance venue?

I still struggle with nerves when performing, so it’s a little difficult for me to say. I’m sure the royal Royal Albert Hall – oh and backed by an orchestra – would be quite the experience. I’ve watched a fair few videos of incredible performances at that venue, although it’d certainly be intimidating.

  • What is the best concert you have ever been to?

Probably Ben Folds. He played solo – just him and a piano – at an outdoor venue in my city. It was such a lovely atmosphere.

  • If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

I do think it’s an amazing time to be alive and making music, especially in regards to creation and sharing. But I do wish it was a little easier for upcoming artists to make a decent living from services such a Spotify; especially when live gigs sometimes aren’t feasible – particularly during the current crisis.

  • Do you have an artist that you would describe as a hidden gem that we should know about?

Here we go again; I’ll have to go with Jacob Collier. I’m not so sure he’s particularly hidden, but most definitely a gem. Such diverse, emotional and intricate music.

  • One last thing we should know about you?

I have music out everywhere (Spotify, iTunes etc.) and would love some new listeners! My most recent release is an EP titled ‘To Fly’ and I’ll be releasing a new single soon.

  • Thanks Ethan French!
