“you can dance if you want to, you can leave your friends behind” | Interview with Cap’n Marble

Continuing their signature blend of nostalgic melodies and sweet, psychedelic hints, Cap’n Marble, a name well-known to anyone following our platform, are back with their latest track, Han Solo. Read our full discussion with them below!

It is great to have you back after six years! What has been the absolute biggest piece of news or evolution in your music lives since we last spoke?

First thing that comes to mind is our upcoming concept album which will release later this year. It’s going to signal an evolution for us sonically that will be exciting to share with everyone as well as daunting to attempt to recreate live.

Han Solo is a moody yet energetic track. When we listen to it, are we meant to dance out our anxieties, or sit in a dark room and brood to them? Was it born out of moodiness or energy?

In the immortal words of the men at work “you can dance if you want to, you can leave your friends behind.”

The track explores the “unnerving experience of being confronted by the unknown.” Was this inspired by a specific personal event, or is it a broader reflection on the current state of the world?

It may be one of those correspondence things but a bit of both. We were just lucky everything came together and lined up nicely with current events.

As artists creating “repackaged for the contemporary consumer” music, how do you ensure your vintage influences feel fresh and relevant today rather than just nostalgic?

All we attempt to do is foster each song into the best version of itself and forget the rest. Our feeling is if we gave it any more thought than that or tried to follow some formula it would dampen the creative flow and lead to a worse final product.

There is an animated music video accompanying the release. How does the animation style reflect the “Marble Universe,” and how closely did you work with the animator to capture the song’s energy?

We animated in house so the style is quite rudimentary and rough around the edges, but at least it’s not ai so score one for us real boys.

If the music of Cap’n Marble was a film, which film would that be?

Back to the Future, the cowboy one.

Artists and people that have influenced you?

I think we have pretty eclectic tastes music wise and a lot of it seeps into the marble mix but we will always have a special place in our hearts for Beatles.

Can you share each other’s funny habits?

Ryan wants me to forget the God Chord. Ryan: John won’t forget the God Chord.

Thank you!
