‘Soothing soul pop’ | Interview with Mared

Seems like something’s missing when you say my name..Mared’s latest single I Don’t Wanna Know is calming, painfully sincere and so damn beautiful. Read our discussion with the artist below!

Describe your sound in 3 words

Soothing soul pop

Tell us a few things about your new single I Don’t Wanna Know and your upcoming EP. What is the main idea behind it?

‘I Don’t Wanna Know’ is the fourth single to be released from my upcoming EP, ‘Something Worth Losing’, which is co-written and produced by Nate Williams. ‘Something Worth Losing’ explores different angles of a healing process in an unapologetic, intricate and carefully crafted EP. ‘IDWK’ is the narrative of someone who is refusing to face the uncomfortable truth of a fading passion. It feeds into the concept of the EP, in that it is an encapsulation of both the dilemma and romanticisation that come with any choice.

Are your songs based on real life stories? What are some harsh truths about love?

I’m definitely spurred to write by personal experiences, however, I’d say my songs are an amalgamation of exaggerated truth and imaginative scenarios. As the songs are collaborations with Nate, we found a natural common ground to combine both our personal experiences in life, which I think makes an interesting blend between fantasy and reality.

Your most honest and personal lyric?

“In a perfect world we’d be sailing through this, in my perfect world maybe we’d have never even met, in your perfect world, would we have to talk about the things that you chose not to say?”

Favourite album of the past decade?

Who Are You Now – Madison Cunningham

If I Don’t Wanna Know was in the end titles of a film, which film would that be?

Marriage Story !!

Do you have an artist that you would describe as a hidden gem that we should know about?

Malan is a Welsh songstress and beaurriful sound maker who I admire!

Save the date, 20th of June, Barbican London. What should listeners expect?

Hmmmm, I’d say expect an immaculate blend between intimate and powerful singing, lots of smiles, accompanied by punchy riffs and groovy piano playing, driven by some very soulful and soothing backing vocals! Oooh and some super special guests too!

Thank you!
