‘Joyful, Energetic, danceable’ | Interview with Ciao Lucifer

Dream of getting closer to you..Cowbells blend with guitars for a noticeably happy, optimistic, windows-down driving song. Read our discussion with Ciao Lucifer.

Describe your sound in 3 words

Joyful, Energetic, danceable

Jungle Book, Mario Kart.. we would love to hear more about Closer and what inspired it.

On an elevator ride to a concert we jammed on that Jungle Book song “I wan’na Be Like You” and made a new groove for it. We played it that night and liked the vibe so much that we took that groove and made a new song out of it. The lyrics are about yearning for a partner that you’re slowly moving away from. They’re sort of contrasting moods, the lyrics and the music, but we like that in art. When it’s not solidly one emotion but rather a layered thing.

How did you two meet and start making music? Would you reveal each other’s funny habits?

We met as early teenagers in high school and have been making music together ever since.
Marnix sleeps through everything on our tour bus including thunder storms and police checks. Willem doesn’t get jetlagged, even when we went to Indonesia he was straight into that timezone. It’s a bit disturbing to be honest.

What is the biggest challenge being a music duo?

Convinving people that our live sound is really just us two playing everything live on stage. No backing tracks etc.

Who is the most iconic duo in pop culture (music, cinema etc)?

Bert & Ernie

Closer is seriously upbeat. In which place or state of mind do you imagine people might listen to your music?

It might be a very Dutch thing but; on your bike on the way to school/work/home.

When/where was the last time you danced?

Marnix: yesterday at a live Cumbia band of friends.
Willem: Yesterday with my girlfriend in the living room while humming an improvised melody

What isn’t a crime but should be?

Not finishing a limerick

Thank you!
