Holidays have a strange way of putting a magnifying glass on the empty chairs at the dinner table. On “All The Memories,” JoDavi teams up with Selina Albright navigating the festive season after losing someone you love.
The song hinges on a line that gets straight to the point: With simple and direct lyrics, (“All the memories which I have around about you, Christmas will not be the same without you.”) it gets straight to the point and cuts deep because anyone who’s lost someone knows that exact feeling of trying to deal with a tradition that suddenly feels incomplete.
Musically, the track relies on a beatiful four-chord progression that fills the room with emotion. There’s a subtle trick in the songwriting here: at some points, the chords flip into a major key, like a sudden flash of hope and a bit of light (“maybe tomorrow things will get better…”). But just as quickly, reality pulls you back mirroring the emotional ping-pong of grief.
A nod to anyone who’s raising a glass to a missing face this year.
