‘Mystic, Kinetic, Clear’ | Interview with Momentum

When you scream, you can inspire fear in others. Or maybe not. Dangerously calming and undeniably dreamy, Momentum’s latest work makes a valid point indeed. Read our discussion below to find out more.

Describe your sound in 3 words

Mystic, Kinetic, Clear

Your new track ‘is called SCREAM, but this song is written and performed at a whisper’. Tell us a few things about it, what is the main idea behind it?

We wanted to show that usually, it’s not about being the loudest in the room. It’s about your inner determination. Your inner fire. That fire that pushes you to learn, grow and expand.

How do you relate to the sound of NYC? Also what do you love/hate in NYC in general?

We’re all influenced by the NYC spirit to seek new sounds and be on the cutting edge. If you rest on your laurels in New York you’ll be left behind. The love of New York is in the push and friction you get from being here. The hate of it is that there’s hardly a moment of rest but you figure out your own rhythm eventually!

Is Jazz the music of freedom?

Yea! It’s an art form that constantly asks you to grow and step out of your comfort zone. In some sense the lesson of jazz is that freedom is found in growth and learning because without those things the music has no electricity.

If you had to choose one album (jazz or not) to take with you on a deserted island, which one would it be?

The Wayne Shorter Quartet album “Without a Net”. It’s fair to say they’re showing what are the outer limits of the human ability to improvise or create value in real time.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

I think it was easy to feel like things should be done in a certain way or certain norms in the jazz world where standard bearers of value. The advice I’d give to my younger self is to be fearless against convention.

What is the story behind your name?

Our name comes from this idea that the creative act of life is a battle against inertia. And in the effort to move forward we create the momentum and resistance needed to ascend.

What isn’t a crime but should be?

New York Rent!

Thank you!
