Irresistibly repetitious and seriously heavy, dead inside is the 2nd track from Keelhaul ‘em All, the new album by the Portland based trio Snailbones. Read our discussion below!
Describe your sound in 3 words
Loud, abrasive & melodic
Tell us a few things about Dead Inside. What is the main idea behind it?
A virus that penetrates a human body and takes over completely. It hijacks the host to replicate itself and takes over the new environment it just entered and unknowingly in the end destroys the environment it now lives in much like the human race itself, except, humans know better. What’s our excuse?
What comes first in your music? The song or the heaviness?
The heaviness is inevitable, it’s always there. We just focus on writing a song from a jam that sticks and build off of that.
Snailbones formed in 2017 out of equal parts frustration and boredom. Do boredom and frustration have a unique effect on creativity?
Absolutely! Music movements like punk rock in the late seventies and eighties and the grunge movement in the early nineties were created out of boredom and frustration. Our frustration comes from income inequality, social inequality, living in a country where ignorant racist bigoted reality tv stars are seen as gods and are voted in as presidents.
Dead Inside is dangerously minimal. Tell us a guitar riff you wish you had composed yourselves.
Any song created by the great Elizabeth Cotten. She’s amazing, I’m not nearly as talented.
If aliens visit us and ask us what noise punk is, which album would you give them to listen to?
Sonic Youth Confusion is Sex
What is the story behind your name?
The name snailbones was in a long list of ideas, we voted democratically on what name was the best and it won. Unfortunately it wasn’t until later that I came up with a much better name. Not going to say what it is, I’ll save it for another project someday.
What isn’t a crime but should be?
Wealth hoarding. Amassing so much wealth that you have more money than 99% of the rest of the population. With that much money you can control legislation to your benefit. We need a maximum wage. Also, maybe music like blink 182 should be illegal because it’s so bad!
Thank you!
