‘I did want to be a doctor when I was in high school’ | Interview with Alex Cuba

The Cuban singer/songwriter partners with the incredible Lila Downs for his new song, Mundo Nuevo. Passionate vocals and seductive melodies, the magical sound of Alex Cuba. Read our interview with the artist below!

Describe your sound in three words please!

Universal, innovative, non-commercial

If Mundo Nuevo came to you like a message, like an answer to a prayer. what would be the question in the first place?

Is there still hope and purpose in this world. The answer seems to be yes by making this world new again with the experience we have; to be more in tune with nature. Seems we have some work to do –

If aliens were wondering what Cuba gave to the world in terms of music, which single song would you give them to listen to?

El Bodeguero by El Orquesta Aragon

Latin Grammy Winner, Grammy Nominated, Juno Award Winner. What moment in your career are you most proud of?

I don’t think it has happened yet; but I am most proud when I receive messages from listeners how much the music has helped or inspired them. It’s really my motive to keep making music.

If you could change anything about the industry to make it easier for newcomers, what would that be?

Eliminate the video component of music and make it all about the sound.

Do you have a memorable story from your performances to share with us ?

In Toronto last year at The Mod Club, a fan passsed out in the middle of the guitar solo, we had to stop playing to see she was all right. When she got up with an “Im fine” I counted in and picked up right where we left off, amid the screams of the crowd. Felt kinda rock star. Sadly I think the venue has since closed.

What is the most usual stereotype about Cuba and its people?

That we are all musical – well that is just not true. Only 9 out of 10 of us are!!!!

What would you be doing if you weren’t a musician?

I would be a songwriter – basically what I’m doing now that I can’t tour. I did want to be a doctor when I was in high school – but I think there are more doctors in Cuba than musicians so I chose wisely.

Thanks Alex!
