We embarked on a discussion with Harrison Kipner, the artist behind the funny and reminiscent track, Stutter (World Ends). Get to know him and his work below.
- Describe your sound in three words please!
Sunny, Sour, California.
- What would you be doing if not songwriting?
If I wasn’t song writing I’ve always wanted to be a teacher, but I don’t think I’ve got anything to teach just yet so I’ll stick to music for the moment, haha.
- Any plans for a debut album?
I do have plans for a Debut album. Its sort of coming together song by song. I want to keep things coming out so its hard to take the time to finish more than just a song at a time by myself, but hopefully over Christmas I will make some head way and have a collection I can put out.
- Are there any ways in real life in which you keep hold of the childhood you talk about in your songs?
I think holding on to childhood is a huge thing for every artist. It’s so important to “play” like a kid when you’re creating because that’s where you can really be yourself. That’s where true originality comes from. When we grow up we stop playing and things become more serious. Everything we do is supposed to have a purpose, but that kind of mentality doesn’t engage your subconscious, and that’s where all the good art comes from (Ps you should check out my song Happy Childhood)
- Favorite lyric of your songs and why?
My favorite lyric of mine is a simple and dumb one from my song “My Style”. It goes, “My Style ain’t your style. High waste jeans and a tucked in shirt, wow” and its my favorite because it’s this weird cross over between a song and my every day life. When I was writing it I was feeling oppressed by my clothes and the expectation of how I felt people thought I should dress. So it was this way of being like, THIS is what I like and its what i’m gonna wear from now on, and im gonna tell everyone in this song so they aren’t surprised when they see it. And at shows its really fun because I wear really high waisted sailor pants that’s people usually notice immediately, so when I sing the song its me confirming what I know they saw and telling them I like it and I don’t give a damn if they think it looks stupid. “high WAIST jeans…” sorry
- What would your dream collaboration be?
I honestly don’t often think about what my “dream collaboration” would be, but I guess I’d have to say Phoebe Bridgers. She’s just this beacon of light and artistry that I think we will all be following for a long time.
- What was the best film you have watched during the quarantine?
The best film I’ve watched during quarantine would have to be Step Brothers, for my 100th time. It was the best because I got to watch it with my family, and despite the masks we howled laughing together and it was good for the soul.
- Have you figured out your plans for this NYE?
And regarding NYE… I honestly fucking hate New Years Eve. Its the perfect example of how over hype usually ruins something. It’s “supposed” to be a so many things, and it’s usually none of them. Yet, despite my feelings for it, I still wait for this surprise New Years thats the best one of my life. I guess it’s kinda like dating… haha.
