Meanwhile Yesterday | Interview with Fancy Dad

Original melodies, uplifting vibe and eclectic grooves. Refreshingly pleasant!  Read our discussion with Fancy Dad below!

Describe your sound in three words

We came up with 2 words and 1 concept – playful, jazzish, backyard soundtrack…

What is the story behind your name?

After months of trying to come up with our band name we were unpacking some mics to record a demo and some of those had been given to our drummer Justin by his dad. Our lead singer Molly at some point said “ooh, fancy dad mics” and that’s how it came to be.

Your music is mostly uplifting. Does this reflect the band’s character as well?

Yeah definitely, our approach to being creative comes from a place of enjoying the work and not taking ourselves too seriously – we want to invite and connect with listeners through the music that comes out of that process.

Your music contains great grooves. If you had to name one song with the best funky drop, which you wish you had composed yourselves, which one would it be?

Great question! This is one that could have several answers but we’re going with F it Up by Louis Cole. Check out the video on YouTube if you haven’t seen it, it has a couple of different funky drops and makes us smile every time.

What do you enjoy most? Writing music or performing your music live?

Remember that time when bands could perform for crowds? We don’t necessarily prefer one over the other, and although we are certainly missing performing right now, we enjoy both for different reasons. Performing live gives you the chance to see people react to something that you’ve been working on, and then to appreciate it with them in real time which can be exhilarating. The most enjoyable part of writing for us is whenever an idea clicks, and you feel as though you’re trying to keep up with the ideas as they present themselves to you.

What would be your dream performance venue?

That’s a tough one, in reality there are many but if we had to choose one it would probably be our home town venue in Oakland, CA the Fox Theater. It’s a beautiful space and we’ve seen some of our favorite shows there.

If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

Definitely the way streaming platforms are set up for artists. It’s how most people are finding and listening to music and it’s nearly impossible for artists to be fairly compensated for their work.

What was the best film you have watched during the quarantine?

For us quarantine has honestly been more about binge watching shows than movies. We’ve mostly watched a combination of British Bake Off and old Star Trek episodes but the best show we’ve seen recently is Queen’s Gambit.

Any future plans?

Since live shows are still off the table for a while we plan to keep writing and recording at home. Currently we’re mixing a new song and looking into releasing a video for another one so look out for some new stuff from us early next year!

Thank you!
