- Describe your sound in three words
Post Apocalyptic Optimism
- What comes first in your music? Lyrics or music? Tell us a few things about your creative process.
I think my process might be trying not to think too much about the process. Nothing is particularly intentional, at least in terms of songwriting. I have a weird collection of voice memos on my phone, and then all of a sudden it feels like there’s a song. My filter is trying to make music that I want to listen to, so I’m sure there are more exact processes along the way.
- Do you like the idea of collaborating? Is songwriting a lonely process?
I do and I don’t. I grew up playing in so many big bands that meant that every idea was a compromise, and no one’s complete idea was fleshed out. I do love collaborating, but usually with an already formed idea. Reacting to something is fun. I haven’t found myself super fond of the ‘let’s get in a room and make something’ approach because I think my ideas happen slowly. That being said, I love working on other peoples tunes, and maybe I’ll be open to more collaborative idea initiation in the future.
- What is your favorite album of the past year?
#1 Dads ‘Golden Repair’ has probably been my most spun new release, so let’s go with that. I don’t normally love piano based music, but this album really grips me.
- Can you share something funny that happened during one of your gigs? And what would be your dream performance venue?
Hmmm gigs seem like an institution of a previous world, so it’s lovely to reminisce. We played a Butternut Sweetheart show in Cairns, where I’d never played before. People started cheering mid song to which I thought “wow, they can’t even wait until the end”. Turns out, there was a movie sized screen behind us playing a football game, and Queensland (Cairns’ state) just scored. Humbling times haha.
- How do you relate to the Sydney music scene?
The Sydney music scene has fostered so many projects I’ve been a part of. I’ve played in tiny bars, established venues, share houses, warehouses, festivals etc. I live in Melbourne now but cannot wait to play in Sydney again, which is always an overwhelming time of friendly and familiar faces. Current state border restrictions are making me even more excited than normal to return.
- What was the best film you have watched during the quarantine
I recently re watched ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’. Gets me every time.
- One last thing we should know about you?
A list of things I’ve been learning in lockdown might work for this question. My new skills/interests include piano tuning, kombucha making, letter writing, skipping (the rope variety), and cooking (malai kofta and agedashi tofu have been winners).
- Thank you!
