Tonight’s feature moves straight into the shadows. LateNightBeatFeast is showcasing Thursday, a deeply melancholic track with sweeping, cinematic strings over an organic trip-hop infused groove. Read our discussion below!
Describe your sound in 3 words
Genre blending electronica
“Thursday” lands in the middle of the week, not quite the weekend. What mood or specific late-night energy were you trying to capture with this track?
I like the to see it as a introspective cinematic journey, intended to fit with the previous tracks I’ve written based on days, it’ll help create a Heptalogy(?) playlist in a couple of albums time.
What was the initial spark for this track. Was it built around the string pattern, the groove or something else?
The initial spark came from element that reminded me of a quindar tone at 11 seconds, which I really liked, and then moved into everything else, with the strings coming quite late but brought the track together.
How does it fit with the rest of the album? Tell us a few things about your album Eight Tracks.
The album title is a play on this being my eighth release, and some of the classic technology and formats in the soundscapes: tape, vinyl and digital all amalgamated together.
The video for the first track ‘Begin Transmission’ uses a few pieces of old tech, with their glitches and character reflecting this.
Artists and people that have influenced you?
The list is long, with artists like Escher and Roy Liechtenstein, filmmakers like David Lynch, Kathryn Bigelow, and musicians such as DJ Shadow, Clint Mansell, Hans Zimmer, Jon Hopkins, Ennio Morricone, Blueneck, Boards of Canada to name a few.
Your favorite most trippy mind blending trip hop groove drop you wish you had composed yourself?
Building Steam With a Grain of Salt, DJ Shadow
If the music of LateNightBeatFeast was a film, which film would that be?
Great question, films and film music have been a big influence for me , so maybe a 70s influenced road movie, with tracks seeping in from the car stereo.
What is the story behind your name?
That period of uninhibited creativity before sleeping, called Hypnagogia, where most of my music comes from.
One thing not many people know about you?
I create instrumental music, as I struggle with things to say, so please forgive any non sensical answers…
Thank you!
