Jordi Forniés – Raíz y Recuerdo [Review]

Memory is a tricky thing. It isn’t a neat, linear file cabinet but more like a messy, living landscape filled with heavy shadows. And occasionally some sudden bright flashes. In his album Raíz y Recuerdo (Root and Memory), Spanish composer Jordi Forniés captures exactly this. The music here is unapologetically melodic, violently cinematic in its scale, yet so heartbreakingly lyrical. It comes and goes like that bright flashes.

At the absolute center of the album is a sense of melancolía and nostalgia. Forniés doesn’t shy away from big emotional statements. He lets long, sweeping, deeply romantic lines stretch out over familiar, comforting chord progressions. And this is making it feel safe, warm, and instantly recognizable. The heavy Spanish and Latin influences bring a rich gravity to the record, making it feel deeply connected to a real place and history.

Then the is that sense of motion. This isn’t passive background music. Instead of a single melody floating over a simple backing track, Forniés builds some intricate pieces. You are constantly listening to two or three distinct melodic layers chasing each other, competing for dominance. It is a constant dialogue where the piano, the Spanish guitar, and a weeping cello constantly pass melodies back and forth like they’re sharing the same deep feeling. One instrument takes the lead, only for another to sweep in and steal the phrase, like old friends arguing over how a shared story actually happened.

Underneath these accessible, romantic melodies lies a beautiful harmonic sophistication. Forniés cleverly incorporates chromaticism and jazz-influenced extended chords. These unexpected notes add a modern element to the neoclassical framework.

Ultimately, Raíz y Recuerdo managed to turn the invisible feeling of human nostalgia into something tangible and deeply moving. So we never forget that our roots always shape our memories. And our melodies.
