Taisen – The Fall Session [Review]

At the heart of this album lies the piano. It is the sun around which every other element orbits. The songwriting utilizes repetitive arpeggios as a pulse, conveying the work’s central message through cycles that feel as though they could spin on forever, leaving the listener wondering if the loop will ever truly end.

The production enriches the piano with different elements and techniques. Rich, analog-sounding synths fill the frequency range, adding a lush, cinematic depth, while legato string instruments provide an extra organic layer. Additionally, the piano itself is treated with creative precision where reverb and delay pedals transform its sound into something beatifully ethereal.

Focusing heavily on atmosphere, each chord progression targets a specific brand of melancholia that is difficult to put into words. Overall it is a remarkably cohesive work that pulls you into its world from the first note and never loses its direction. Place it alongside your favourite neoclassical cinematic works in your library.
