Kepa Lehtinen – Unet/Kesä/Lost Opportunities [Review]

We typically avoid featuring the same artist repeatedly, but Kepa Lehtinen makes this difficult. His work consistently resonates with a specific, deep chord in our aesthetic. It is a rare experience to know, even before we press play, that we are going to love the next track.

In “Unet” the artist creates an absolutely atmospheric soundscape in. The track blends eerie piano arpeggios with the sweet resonance of the double bass. Dominating the mix, the theremin is always the central focus, generating an out-of-this-world, cosmic feeling. This unsettling sound evokes a profound sense of anxiety, the source of which remains beautifully undefined.

While still retaining an overtly deep sound, “Kesä” strikes a more peaceful and gentle tone. This composition is a soundtrack in itself—the kind of piece so evocative and high-quality that its mere inclusion could significantly elevate a film.

In “Lost Opportunities,” Kepa Lehtinen introduces the melancholic timbre of the mellotron, blending it with the piano and, as ever, the theremin, which consistently remains at the heart of his compositions, a masterclass in emotional depth. The feeling it conveys goes far beyond mere sadness; it dives into a profoundly deeper emotional space. This depth is precisely why his work resonates so powerfully, touching on personal feelings you might have thought were beyond the reach of music.
