‘hypnotic neurotic exposed’ | Interview with Hypochondrische Ängste

Hypochondrische Ängste present their second single from the upcoming album—a raw, cinematic work driven by a very difficult to resist, haunting, vibraphone layer balancing serious depth with bold experimental elements. Read our conversation below as we dive into the vision behind Deutschlantis!

Describe your sound in 3 words

hypnotic neurotic exposed

Tell us a few things about Deutschlantis. What is the main idea behind it?

“Deutschlantis” is the swan song of a wonderland of the same name, in which, now that the 1.5¡ target has been reached and the sun is always shining, the jacuzzi, the flow of goods and the flow of traffic, all flowing and everyone is looking particularly dazzling today. But just as secretly as a certain Haydnian imperial hymn spreads the sedated and sedating composition, a darkening anger gradually creeps over the jacuzzi and gives rise to the suspicion that something is somehow sinking here. Is this the much-vaunted downfall of the West? Is it here now? Oh, no. It’s probably just the air mattress losing its air. Or is it the tipsiness wearing off.

How does Deutschlantis reflect current societal anxieties about climate change and late capitalism?

while the music imagines a slowly moving underwater experience the lyrics hallucinate a decadent world of luxury and exploitation where the means meet their ends and all falls into one and is washed away by an unforgiving fragile system that nurtures us as long as we manage to keep the balance, which was never the case, but only now we seem to have reached peak capability to fuck up the small window of naturally given circumstance that allows complex life to exist to be sold for a last party, a roar of hubris and the inevitable deep dive into a manmade infinity pool

What do you hope audiences will take away from the absurdity and surrealism of Deutschlantis?

We like to conjure up a different more abstract view on very real and pressing issues concerning social and environmental topics in contrast to the archetypal protest pamphlet a lot of pop songs provide. Yet we like to be still accessible in words and music, while taking listeners seriously in the way that we trust them to be able to deal with more than reassuring guidelines and are able to think for themselves. The world is a complex issue and art is able to connect dots in the recipients mind were neither reason nor jumping to easy answers provide a good perspective

If the music of Hypochondrische Ìngste wasa film, which film would that be?

It would certainly be three films at once on top of each other. One would be a slowly narrated documentary about the thuringia forests, one would be a surreal action thriller and one would be a shopping channel

Artist and people that have influenced you?

not so much artists from the music world really, but art in general as a way to think, connect patterns and live life have influenced the band. Some names would be Christoph Schingensief, David Byrne, Marina Abramović

In which state of mind do you imagine people might listen to your music?

attentive

What is next for you?

an album release tour in may through germany, switzerland and italy and a new musical programme

Thank you!
