‘Industrial, cinematic and dystopian’ | Interview with Moldova

Balancing between diverse genres, Moldova immerses us in their apocalyptic realm, rich with movie-like industrial tones, a robust arrangement, and atmospheric guitar layers. Read our discussion below!

Describe your sound in 3 words

Industrial, cinematic and dystopian.

Tell us a few things about Wilderness. What is the main idea behind it?

Philosophy of surface and aggressive freedom. Struggle of massive forces. Hope vs desperation. Mortality vs eternality.

Your music is an alchemy of styles, fusing industrial and cinematic atmospheres with an innovative, hardcore sound. Can you elaborate on the creative process behind combining these diverse elements?

We have built a habit of going to Lasses cottage in Hammaslahti every summer. We take some instruments with us and start the creative process in the middle of the forest. We hit objects around us to hear their sounds, try different tunings and unconventional ways to play guitars, sometimes we have recorded interesting sounds beforehand (lynchian sounds from the cities etc…). Then we try different echo-environments and effects. At some point there appears a sound that has a magical aura around it. Our journey starts there.

If the music of Moldova was a film, which film would that be?

Modern Stalker

Artists and people that have influenced you?

Tommi: Mick Gordon, Hildur Guðnadóttir, Gareth Coker, Junkie XL, Ludwig Göransson… If I can only name a few.

Ville: My friends and parents. Georges Gurdjieff, Kurt Cobain, Prodigy, CMX.

Lasse: I have listened to many styles of music throughout my life. Most of them are stylistically quite far from Moldova, but slight traces and nods to various parts of music history can be found here and there. To give a small example – guitar playing style of Fortuna’s end is derived from flamenco music (but the outcome is very far from it since it is played with a distorted electric guitar). Amongst other styles my affection with different kinds of rock/metal, electronic music and experimental music can be heard in Moldova. When writing Moldova songs I try to forget everything I’ve heard and approach instruments in new ways.

In which place or state of mind do you imagine people might listen to your music?

When you want to hear something intense, surprising and musical – it’s time for Moldova. We believe Moldova to be rather electrifying music. It could be listened right before doing something brave and hard.

How did you come up with the name for the band?

Boston, Kansas and Europe were taken.

What isn’t a crime but should be?

Sophistry, blatant lying and malignant misleading. (Honestly these would be hard to pinpoint in many cases – thankfully we are merely musicians, not creating laws!)

Thank you!
