Sound the call;
it seems they’re here for us this time
Sound the call;
it seems to be the end of time.
In their composition “Unspoken” Vordona craft a progressive metal track that transcends a singular focus on heaviness, giving equal importance to the artistry of the song. Expect traditional acoustic elements, melancholic melodic lines, and electrifying, solid guitar centric sound. Read our conversation with the band for more insights!
Describe your sound in 3 words
Dark, Melancholic, Reflective.
Can you share the story of how Vordona came into existence, and what inspired you, Pavlo Mysak, to form the band back in 2021?
Pavlo: I discovered progressive metal. This new sound was so inspiring and it led me to form Vordona. I had begun writing some instrumental singles then introduced Tony Ricci- from there, the band grew into what it is today.
Vordona’s music is a juxtaposition of rawness and polish, intensity and refinement. How do you, as a band, balance these contrasting elements in your compositions?
Oscar: I think the contrast comes naturally from each members’ musical background. We’re all into different stuff and the music reflects that.
Adding to our previous question, could you elaborate on the experimental and exploratory aspects of your musical approach? Should music as a form of art always challenge the listener?
Pavlo: This is an interesting question- I’m not sure whether music should always challenge the listener- this definitely isnÕt something we think about when writing. Our writing approach involves a lot of trial and error. Sometimes our ideas can be a bit too Ôout thereÕ, so we have to take a step back and do what’s right for a song. Experimental aspects in music are great- as long as it creates something goodÉ otherwise you’re just being experimental for the sake of being experimental.
Artists and people that have influenced you?
From the three of us: Alice in Chains, Pink Floyd, Tesseract, Jinjer
Do you think there is a true underground sound today?
Pavlo: For sure! While I think it’s hard to define ÔundergroundÕ, there are so many smaller bands out there today that are creating some super cool and different stuff- especially in the prog metal scene. It’s also very cool to see these bands getting a lot of recognition; I think that the prog scene does a good job of promoting smaller artists, which is a great thing to see.
A song you would pay to hear for the first time again?
Oscar: Stubb A Dub by Mr. Bungle. I was never the same after hearing Bungle.
Are we on a slippery slope towards dystopia?
Pavlo: I don’t think so. Economically, we generally see standards of living rising all over the world. How will environmental issues play into this? It’s hard to definitively tell right now but they will have a large impact on when we reach a state of society that resembles the classic dystopian image.
Thank you!
