‘Emotional, raw, melancholic’ | Interview with HeartBlanch

HeartBlanch’s Destiny Holes stands out with its melancholic guitar tones and alternative rock vibes. Dive into our conversation with the band to learn more!

Describe your sound in 3 words

Artem, vocals: Emotional, raw, melancholic

Can you elaborate on the specific influences that contribute to the melancholic and post-punk elements in your music?

Artem, vocals: I think we try to broadly merge all the good things we’ve been hearing in post-punk movement since 1970th up to now with light irony and touch of meta-modern approach. But being sincere in songwriting is a core value to me

Genna, guitar: For me the history of music begins with post-punk and new wave of the 80th. The honest voices, meaningful words, dragging melodies sounding from the inside. That was, and still is, a breath of clean air in the stuffy theatre.

Dmytro, drums: I come from punk/metal background, but somewhere along my musical endeavours I stumbled upon BadBadNotGood and fell in love with modern jazz. You can hear the influence in my drum parts. Hopefully

How do you approach incorporating cultural and local influences into your music, given your roots in Kyiv, Ukraine?

Artem, vocals: Being here in Ukraine we always feel connected to the global music culture, but of course our perception is shaped by reality we live in.
Now as our country is at war I think every work of art coming from Ukraine contains some call for freedom as our people are fighting for it every day

Dmytro, drums: Our Ukrainian identity means a lot to us and we view ourselves as part of the western civilised world meaning that we enjoy the same vibes as you guys do. We’re like you and our music serves as a proof of that.

Genna, guitar: Ukrainian culture is a mix of tragedy, desire of fun, and melodic songs. I strive to embrace that mix in my guitar moods, beats, and melodies.

A song you are secretly obsessed with?

Artem, vocals: Roman Holiday by Fontains D.C.
Genna, guitar: Tsvite Teren, Ukrainian folk song
Dmytro, drums: Krechet – 17

If the music of HeartBlanch was a film, which film would that be?

Artem, vocals: The Bogemian Life by Aki Kaurismäki
Genna, guitar: The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover by Peter Greenaway
Dmytro, drums: I’m a YouTube nerd, sorry. Sadly I don’t have enough of an attention span to sit through a movie.

What is the story behind your name?

Genna, guitar: Not sure where it comes from exactly but to me Heartblanch has always been a name for feeling of emotional relief

How do you envision the future of HeartBlanch, both musically and in terms of the band’s overall journey?

Artem, vocals: It seems we are in a constant search, chasing our chimera of beauty, sometimes it’s great to feel you sort of coming close to it, so we’ll be doing it over and over. Might be one day we could get real close

Genna, guitar: We learn to play from our lives and get inspired by each other tunes. Catching a true song brings an incomparable feeling and is the main win. I see this as a livelong process with an unpredictable journey.

Dmytro, drums: No matter where life takes us, I’ll be there with a sick beat to support the adventure

What’s your advice to humanity?

Artem, vocals: Wake up!
Genna, guitar: Reread old tales.
Dmytro, drums: Value the human inside you and treat other humans with love and respect

Thank you!
