Find your place in the cosmic haze.
Alternative pop with psychedelic vibes straight from New York. Read our discussion with Morning Silk.
Tell us a few things about Find Your Place. What is the main idea behind it?
I remember feeling like I didn’t belong in New York when I first moved here. I felt like the music I was interested in making had no place here. The song came about when I was playing piano.. I just sang “Find Your Place on your own.” I realized that belonging is what you make it. Even if you’re on your own it doesn’t mean there isn’t space for you. I recorded the lead riff with my 2nd guitar ever, a guitar I found in the trash in the east village. It has the most present voice on the song besides the vocals.
A spaceship from a far away galaxy visits us tomorrow and wants to learn what psychedelia is. What makes a song psychedelic?
I think what makes a song psychedelic is the vibe paired with the lyrics. I think lyrics play a huge part in the introspective tone of a song. The music itself has to carry you through a journey of some sort. Effects are secondary to vocal Melodie’s and the chords. I think you can have a psychedelic song with just an acoustic guitar and vocals. I guess I’m just trying to say that effects don’t define the genre.
Artists and people that have influenced you?
I think first starting out the band that made me want to write music again was MGMT. I was in college at the time, studying architecture. I remember hearing a song from congratulations and realized this is what I wanted to do. Nowadays I think my biggest influences are my friends. Middle Part, Richie Quake, DBA James, Anna Shoemaker, Richard Orofino have influenced the new work.. I have the privilege of writing and producing for their projects or my own , so we have sort of built a little New York scene out of collaboration.
If a time machine could take you anywhere for one day, when/where would you go?
I would go back to the 90s and live in NYC. I wanna learn about my family when they were there. What kind of shows they were going to. It’s just so unaffordable right now.
In which place or state of mind do you imagine people might listen to your music?
I want to make music for a kid that’s too scared to be who they are or do what they want. I feel like I’ve been trying to do this my whole life but never wanted to admit it to anyone else because of job cliches. But here I am finally living the way I wanted to for so many years!
What do you love/hate about New York?
I love the people and the art they make here. I hate how insanely overpriced it is. The housing market is going to cause some major problems in all entertainment and creative industries. They’re driving everyone out, and the culture will die.. that’s why I didn’t like San Francisco. I felt like there were so many tech people there. I hope NYC won’t become that but I have a feeling it’s on its way.
I think it inspires all of us to make art about the struggle of living here. There are some really real people out here.
What is the story behind your name?
Morning Silk was a name I came up with when I was in college still. My old band mate at the time and I wanted to make music that was smooth and vibey. One morning we just said Silk is smooth and feels luxurious. The songs always wanted to be really lush and vibey. I feel like this next record I’m about to put out, called “Dark City Silence” really embodies what Morning Silk is supposed to be/sound like.
