Describe your sound in 3 words

Overlapping Oscillating Bodies of Sound

Tell us a few things about Dive. What is the story behind it?

In this composition, we tried to find a kind of simple organic metro-rhythmic shape, which would have the capacity to emulate endlessness. The basic groove from which the composition later grew was a bassline, a submarine sonar and drums. In terms of the structure, we stayed with our proven evolving form.

What led you to choose the name “Dive” for the entire composition? How does it encapsulate the feeling and concept you wanted to convey?

As is our custom, the music was created first and then we searched for a fitting name for it. In this composition, there is a strongly present element of trance based on the repetitive processes from which the whole composition is built. Some of the sounds used evoked a plunge into unexplored depths. It could have been named completely differently, but at the moment it is relevant for us to name the inward motion, immersion.

Your music has an experimental touch. Should music as a form of art always challenge the listener?

Our music has an experimental feel only because there are other, more established ways of expressing musical thought, which are perhaps easier to access due to historical reasons stemming from culture, education etc. For us it is a sincere and natural way of speaking through music – without trying to shock or tear down tradition just for the fun of it. It is not “challenging” in this intellectual sense… I would say that every kind of music has its place in the myriads of music entities in existence – it depends on the listener – if they are riding the same wave as us for a longer time, it is completely natural. If they are not used to it, it sure can be a new flavour to add to their appetite.

Which loop/sample/song you could listen to till infinity and beyond, which you wish you had composed yourselves?

The best endless loops are found in nature. A river, a forest hum – we composers are just deriving our strive for organicity in our pieces from our longing for this endless beauty of ceaseless impulses.
The universe is the best composer I know.

You have performed in various countries, such as Poland, Germany, Holland, Italy, Slovenia, and the UK. Can you share something funny that happened during one of your gigs? And what would be your dream performance venue?

We would like to play more abroad in general. We find that the audiences outside of our home country are more prone to understanding the message of our sound, although there are many exceptions. We like big specialized jazz festivals that bring together great communities of like-minded people. These “educated” people have open hearts for this musical adventure we embark upon. They understand that philosophically it is an aesthetic involving many layers and genres, sometimes including jazz, and they are willing to follow us to these new worlds, free of any determining style, free of categories that hinder the true nature of feelings. Tabula rasa, uncharted territory. Just pure freedom of discovery.

If you could change anything about the music industry, what would it be?

The music industry of today is quite hard to survive in for people who want to remain free. We should be much more connected as artists, educate our audiences, be transparent about money – and get sufficient funding for catering to all age groups. We do things we love but have to work three other jobs just to get by.

If the music of Zabelov Group was a film, which film would that be?

In some aspect the music already is a film about things which we are unable to talk about, lands unknown, islands untouched.
If I had to choose a genre, it is an authentic time-capsule documentary – where you shoot for 48 hours and every little aspect of the life you share with the people is there, included.

Thank you!
