‘Vintage melodic progrock.’ | Interview with Space Junk is Forever

With an exceptional fusion of vintage synths and a solid prog rock foundation, Space Junk is Forever deliver a spacey instrumental melodic prog album that represents the genre at its absolute finest. Read our discussion with the band below!

Describe your sound in 3 words

Vintage melodic progrock.

Tell us a few things about SJF4. What is the main idea behind it?

the main idea is to fuse the sounds vintage keyboard instruments: Hammond organ, Moog, Rhodes, Clavinet, and mellotron – in a modern prog style and modern production… but also dipping into the compositional styles of my favorite classical composers: Bach, Chopin, Debussy, Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, and many others.

Which track of the album, if any, represents you the most and why?

on the new album, SJF4, I would would say “Rogue Wizard” represents the band sound the best. It’s dark, very Bach and Chopin influenced, but also has a great groove and a crazy jam section.

Is the absence of vocals an extra challenge when it comes to promoting your work?

Yes, of course it’s a hurdle, drawing in new listeners while not including vocals. And I do love to write songs and lyrics. But writing for this band, I just wanted it to be pure juicy instrumental goodness. Like all the sections of a prog song that you like, minus all parts that you don’t really want to hear over and over – and for me, it’s often the vocals I could do without. Also long intros and outros/pure soundscape type stuff. Everyone just fast forwards through it. Often Space Junk tunes only wind up being 2 or 3 minutes long as a result. On our EP “Space Images” each song is anywhere from 30 seconds to a minute and a half. Just deliver the goods and get out.

Artists and people that have influenced you?

Well I mentioned the classical composers, but also bands like Rush and Yes. For newer bands I frequently put on Animals as Leaders and I will go to see them whenever they are playing within a few hours of where I live. Great live show. Knower is another favorite- especially their earlier albums. I also love certain electronic artists like Plaid and Tipper.

If you had a time machine that could take you back to the 1970s, which band would you choose to see perform?

Zeppelin.

In which place or state of mind do you imagine people might listen to your music?

Headphones at home. High as hell.

What is the story behind your name?

It’s just a funny little thing I thought of for the name of a song that is on SJF1. We liked it as band name too. Initially we just wanted to call the band “Space Junk” – but that name was taken by a similar band out in Buffalo NY.

Thank you!
