The new album from Kansas based metal band “Parthian” is a haunting blend of brutal guitar work and haunting, dark elements. Fans of both melodic death metal and Lovecraftian themes will be enthralled. Read our discussion below!
Describe your sound in 3 words
There are so many things we try to say with our music, but if we had to narrow it down to only 3, it would have to be: Melodic, brutal, horror
Tell us a few things about your debut concept album Desolation of a Ceaseless Dawn. What is the story behind it?
Desolation of a Ceaseless Dawn is the tale of a man seeking more out of his life, feeling he is owed more and destined for more. With that mindset, he sets out to attain a forbidden knowledge that will be the catalyst towards the life he dreams of… or so he thinks. In typical Lovecraftian fashion, the man ends up with far more than what he bargained for.
You go back in time and meet H. P. Lovecraft in person. What is the first thing you tell/ask him?
Don’t be such a racist prick – It’s widely known that H.P. Lovecraft wasn’t the most accepting individual of people who looked different than him, which is something we feel we must confront head on when taking inspiration from his work.
What is the darkest metal album of the past decade?
Not necessarily the heaviest, but when it comes to the darkest metal album based on lyrical content and atmosphere it’s hard to top Magma by Gojira. It’s very heavy both in musicality but also in lyrical content.
Tell us a guitar riff you wish you had composed yourself.
Okay – hear us out on this one. The harmony riff from “Reelin’ in the Years” by Steely Dan. LEGENDARY!
In which place or state of mind do you imagine people might listen to your music?
Any state of mind, really! We challenge ourselves to write music that is super diverse. We don’t find it fun to play the same thing over and over again so we hope to leave a little something in our music for anyone and everyone. Whether we succeed in that, who knows? But that is our mission!
What is the biggest challenge(s) you have faced as music artists?
As with a lot of independent artists the financially challenges can sometimes be tough. Getting enough money to record and album and fully capture the vision on a musical, art, and production standpoint is a challenge in and of itself. On the other hand you have to factor in the cost to travel and play these songs live. It can be a lot at times, but you just have to make it work.
What isn’t a crime but should be?
Easy! Venues taking a cut of the band’s merch sales.
Thank you!
