Ghost is the debut single by Nicola Michelle. Delightfully cinematic and intimate, the track is characterised by the expressive vocal delivery accompanied by Conan Karpinski on the acoustic piano and a warm, atmospheric string section. Read our discussion with the artist below!
Describe your sound in 3 words
ethereal, melodic, calming
Tell us a few things about your debut single Ghost. What is the story behind it?
I started writing this song on my guitar, playing around with chords I liked. I had a melody stuck in my head which was the inspiration for Ghost. When I went into the studio, I was not planning to record this song since it was only 3/4 of the way written. The producer helped me write the chorus and the song blossomed beautifully in studio. The producer Conan Karpinski is playing piano on this track!
Ghost has a lovely James Bond vibe. Was this intentional? Or it just happened?
That’s funny you say that, as it’s been common feedback! It was not intentional but I love how it sounds in the recording. When I was writing this song on my guitar I knew it had a moody feel to it, but when the producer added piano it definitely began to feel more reminiscent of a James Bond movie.
I’ve been inspired by Nick Mulvey lately—I love his finger-picking guitar style and his references to nature lyrically. My favourite vocalist is Hannah Reid from London Grammar.
As a new artist, what was the biggest challenge you faced so far?
Imposter syndrome. Letting go of my doubts and going ahead with recording and sharing my music.
Do you sing in the shower? What songs?
Oh yes all the time. Ain’t No Mountain High Enough is my go-to. I also find I get song ideas in the shower.
Cats, dogs or …?
I just moved to Vancouver Island with my partner. I am so excited to spend the summer adventuring, camping, biking, and writing music. I’d like to record a full acoustic album eventually. I find I get inspiration by going out and living my life. So that’s the plan for now!
