‘Considered Cinematic Syncopation’ | Interview with Markus Wormstorm

Markus Wormstorm’s Invisible Friend has the hypnotic, quality sound of early James Holden,  laced with some delicate, synthwave inspired synth arpeggios and a haunting, beautifully deep vocal section. Read our interview with the South African electronic musician.

Describe your sound in 3 words

Considered Cinematic Syncopation

Tell us a few things about your new song Invisible Friend. What is the main idea behind it?

Invisible Friend was initially the first song in an album called Maven. (I later split it into 4 EPs, Invisible Friend is the last in set) I wrote some copy outlining the album’s concept

In the near future, designer algorithms will fabricate emotion. Our process of voice synthesis and layering trace the contours of this world. Allow these compositions to transport you there. We hope you enjoy this experience.

In other words the song is about artificial emotion. Its up to the listener to add their own story. If i had to extract a narrative from the lyrics I’d say “a girl sees a figure in refracted light”

Do you consider Invisible Friend club driven? In which place or state of mind do you imagine people might listen to your music?

Yes its meant to be played loud, preferably at a festival. The production is more psychedelic than the catchy melody lets on. It should make people feel high and nostalgic.

How has your sound progressed over the years and the different projects you have been involved in?

I started in hip hop, which became glitch hop, then hip house, then modern classical. Then last batch of EP’s have been synthwave and synthpop inspired.

You won, and have been nominated for, a number of awards. What moment in your career are you proudest of?

I suppose I should be proud of winning a Safta award for best original composition for a Motion Picture, or maybe the Special Destination Award at Annecy. But TBH I dont really feel proud or complacent, instead I feel excited about the stuff that I’m working on.

What is your favorite album of the past year?

Somni451 – Seven Signals In The Sky

If you had to choose one Synthesizer (analog or digital) which one would it be?

Yamaha CS-80

People who had Imaginary Friends as children, were they real to them, or were they just talking nonsense to us?

Whatever we experience as real, is real.

Thank you!
