This one is not for your relaxed jazz playlist. It’s filled with emotion. Pathos. The last thing it will make you feel is relaxed. It requires your full attention.
Ok, disclaimer. We have to admit. We have a couple of pianists in Secret Eclectic. It is our Achilles tendon.

Describe your sound in 3 words
Expressive, lyrical, mystical.
“Wenn es Abend wird, Pt. 1” is portrayed as the “mystical moment when daylight fades.” What specific musical element, be it harmony, rhythm, or texture, did you use to capture that subtle transition from light to darkness?
The song starts with a clear melody and then turns into a darker improvisational part, so the whole texture — including rhythm and harmony — changes.
You have over 150 live shows under your belt. How has the experience of live performance influenced your songwriting?
Well, even though audiences can vary, there’s a certain pattern in how songs tend to be “understood” or have an emotional impact. So I try to build some climaxes within the arrangement. But to be honest, since it’s mostly improvised, I still like to go with the flow of the audience.
Going back in time, how did your formal academic training inform, or perhaps challenge, your initial musical instincts?
Short answer: Overthinking. As you gain more knowledge in music — in theory or in the craft of your instrument — it becomes harder to decide what and how you want to express yourself.
Is improvisation a talent or a skill?
It’s both, but mostly a skill. Talent only helps at the start of your journey. 🙂
Is there such a thing as over practicing?
Probably. There are many different aspects of practicing. Overpracticing can simply mean getting lost in details, losing variety, or missing the bigger picture. The right way to practice is an art in itself — one I haven’t mastered yet! Hahaha.
