Swedish DJ and producer Anna-My is back with her debut EP In Motion, Always, a 5 track work.
The EP kicks off with Shibuya, a highly danceable disco track driven by a consistent four-on-the-floor beat and a pumping synth bassline. Its structure is mostly based on a simple yet effective I-VII chord progression, with a single variation appearing in the middle. Rather than relying on a distinctive theme, the track uses playful synth sounds that dance between the left and right channels to create a kinetic energy that immediately makes you wanna move.
The next track, Anna, opens with spoken word before an expansive, atmospheric synth arpeggio playing solo. It’s sound textured by added white noise creates the illusion of a subtle, accompanying hi-hat.
The track works as a predule to next track Memoria which starts with a soft kick and a heavilly processed snare that’s clearly the focus. The synth arpeggio and a driving, minimal electro bouncy bassline solidifies the rhythm. The added synth chords create a powerful sense of forward motion, continuously developing the track until it reaches its most complex and layered pattern in the closing moments.
The fourth track, Luigi, is characterized by a high-impact sound. The beat, enriched by its layered snare and the driving classic house hi-hat loop, feels like it has been pushed to its limit by intense compressor setting. Musically, and for the first time on the EP, a distinctive synth riff takes the center stage of the track. Continuing the momentum of the EP, this song once again invites you to the dance floor, accepting no excuses.
The EP ends with a surprise. Anna-My teams up with alt-R&B artist Harrison First for Traits, ditching the disco influences, moving into a minimalist, clubby tech house territory, notably more darker, underlining the producer’s skill in experimenting across various genres.
True to its name, In Motion, Always ensures you never stop. In motion. Always.
