The story behind “Your Dog” is a tragically comedic tale of unrequited love, all set to a really playful production. Grab your dog and listen to this one together – which you were probably planning on doing anyway.
Describe your sound in 3 words
It’s complicated
Tell us a few things about ‘Your Dog’. What is the story behind the track?
not so long ago, I fell in love with a woman and she didn’t fall in love with me.
To my surprise, I fell in love with her dog.
At first, we didn’t really click. It took me a while to realize the dog was a genius. We went hiking in nature, and on the way back, he led us, retracing the exact path we had taken there, right at the tree, left at the rock, that kind of thing. I began to respect him. I realized he was much smarter than all of us. We became friends. In fact, my direct connection with him became stronger than my connection with her. We even shared common interests, like longing for her.
One day, she surprised me by saying, “My dog is totally in love with you.” I was a little embarrassed. I didn’t have an immediate answer, I’m a bit slowaround her. Only a few days later, after the sentence kept echoing in my mind, did I think that I should have answered right away: “Learn from him.”
One night, at the piano, it just came out as a sad song, melodically and harmonically tangled. I was about to leave the piano when my body and heart suddenly shouted what I’d been suppressing, a cry of pain:
“Owwww. Owwww, it hurts. Owwww, it hurts that you don’t love me.”
The repetition of “Your dog” and the contrasting lines about love create a clear, almost conversational structure. Can you walk me through the lyrical choices you made to build this emotional arc throughout the song?
I simply described the situation in an accurate and cynical way, with a bit of cleverness in the C part.
The track could be interpreted in a few different ways as genuinely sad, a little humorous, or even slightly obsessive. As the artist, what is the central emotion you hope the listener takes away from the track?
All of the above… but please keep “obsessive” as a secret.
In which place or state of mind do you imagine people might listen to your music?
It’s a question that I don’t have the answer to. I write my own feelings, mostly as a message to a woman or issue that bothered me and gave me pain, and hope that they will hear it and other people might find it close to their feelings. If I were aiming directly at other people’s feelings and state of mind, I’d feel like a copywriter for TV and radio commercials, and that’s something I’d only do if I were really in need of money, and I probably wouldn’t be successful at that either, since I’d reject 90% of the clients because of veganism.
Artists and people that have influenced you?
Elton John, Ian Dury, Frank Zappa and many others. I listen, obsessively, to music since I was 12. Used to be a dj for 19 years and have 6,000 vinyls. Music was always my shelter and my weapon.
If ‘Your Dog’ was a film, which film would that be?
I always hope that the song will change that/other woman heart, so hopefully a romantic comedy, but in reality … tragic comedy.
Something not many people know about you?
I have a rare blood type and I donate blood every 3 months since I was 19. It’s the easiest way to lose half a kilogram and the most Important thing you can do for the other. The Blood Bank, the place where I go every three months, is the only place I feel as a celebrity.
Thank you!
