Describe your sound in 3 words
organic, soulful, distinct
Tell us a few things about Lucky Me? What is the main idea behind it?
the inspiration came from a frightening experience as I was diagnosed with bladder cancer. if found and treated early enough, from all the threatening cancers out there, its not that dangerous, that’s why I called the track lucky me. but yeah, this shit makes you shiver.
You’re known for using unique field recordings in your music. What’s the most unexpected sound you’ve ever incorporated into a track?
I’m afraid I cannot pin it down to one specific one as it was too many. but on my upcoming album, one tiny sound that I like a lot is a fly that I trapped inside a glass and used its nervous sound as a little percussion sound on the track “Holz und Silber”
With so many producers relying on the same sample packs, presets and patterns, how do you ensure your productions remain original and organic?
I pretty much exclusively use sounds that I crafted by myself (exceptions prove the rule) – all the drums, everything percussion comes out of either one of my machines, is a one-shot out of a longer recording that I made or a little loop that I cut out of a shaker session for example. synths are mostly hardware and programmed by myself.
another (probably the main reason) big difference is, that I don’t or barely listen to other producers’ work – as I don’t dj and exclusively play live, I keep myself off the scene and actual trends. this is both a big complication of my life but also an insurance to not follow any other than my taste.
Favorite synth riff/melody or groove you wish you had composed yourself?
daft punk – around the world
Your breakthrough came at a young age with Una Pena. Looking back, how do you feel that track shaped your career?
honestly, even when it was the track that made everyone raise its eye-brows, it didn’t shape my music in the sense that I only made this type of techno.
Do you have an artist that you would describe as a hidden gem that we should know about?
I’m a big fan of “leif” – he deserves more attention I believe. there’s a certain elegance in his music that I really like.
Something not many people know about you?
I love to do hobby horsing but don’t tell anyone.
Thank you!
