‘Meditative, soulful, meditative (dubstep!)’ | Interview with Katja

Katja unveils HEALING, a track infused with classic dubstep vibes, a deep, sultry bassline designed to test your sound system, cinematic synths, a smooth future garage beat, and ethereal vocals that drift through the mix. Read our discussion with the artist below!

Describe your sound in 3 words

Meditative, soulful, meditative (dubstep!)

Tell us a few things about HEALING. What is the main idea behind it?

HEALING is my own way of releasing the constraints of a difficult and long-lasting turbulent relationship that ended finally last year. I love the man but our depths were too deep for one another and we couldn’t swim together.

Your most honest and personal lyric?

“You liked the fights…I might have done too”. This is me being truthful about staying in the chaos of the relationship and somehow enjoying the drama even though it wasn’t good for us.

What made you gravitate towards bass driven atmospheric electonika? Artists and people that have influenced you?

Ahh, so many! Fundamentally – Portishead, Erykah Badu, El-B, Calibre, Greentea Peng, Alfa Mist, Mala, Andreya Triana, Tribe Called Quest, Sade, Burial… so much dub, dubstep, garage, jungle, soul, hip hop…

Do you think there is a true underground sound today?

There is, but it’s hard to describe it as underground sound as most things are now so widely available on platforms. There is still definitely an underground ”flavour” – dark, deep and stomping beat and atmospheric melodies or lyrics that don’t sit ANYwhere inside the mainstream.

In 2016, you co-founded the electronic-soul group Goldaka. What did being part of a group teach you about music, and how has that experience influenced your solo work today?

Being in Goldaka taught me how fun it is to play music, and to sprinkle in your ideas with other musicians ideas and create something so mixed and varied. Working with those guys helped me to bring in more subtlety to my singing and lyrics, a bit more finesse shall we say.

Living a nomadic lifestyle while working on your music is unique. Do you think that freedom of movement and travel shapes your creativity differently than a more traditional studio setting would?

YES! Writing songs whilst looking out over a beach or across snowy mountains is so inspirational. It helps expand your mind to create whilst travelling, and so expands your music output. The only problem is, I have so many different ideas for different settings and none of them seem to get done any time soon haha!

What do you love/hate about Norwich?

I love that it’s quiet, but busy enough so you feel part of something community-based. I love the old Norwich hippies, the market here that sells EVERYTHING and also its beautiful medieval architecture. It is so close to beautiful nature too. We need more music events here though…it’s a bit dead. I might start a jazzy & hip hop jam night here soon.

Thank you!
