‘Yorkshire, garage-punk, rock-n-roll’ | Interview with Avalanche Party

No questions from the audience
No questions from the secret police
No questions from the spilling moon bleeding out wall to wall

A couple of question from us.

Collateral Damage encapsulates the energetic and frenzied sound of the band featuring heavy riffs and a dynamic vocal delivery. Read our discussion with Jordan Bell (vocalist/guitarist).

Describe your sound in 3 words

Yorkshire, garage-punk, rock-n-roll

You could describe the themes of our new single Collateral Damage by –

  1. Robbing a bank
  2. Jumping out of a helicopter
  3. Playing ‘got your nose’ with a Tiger Shark. It’s a supreme state of mind.

Your most honest and personal lyric?

‘I want to go to a Moscow club, drink red wine til it stains my blood and dance Swan Lake really fucking good’ – John Coltrane’s Moscow Skyscraper.

Can you share your experience working with producer Dave Catching at Rancho De La Luna studio?

Working with Dave Catching was a true dream, a wakeful bliss. Dave is a universal force. He is the motorway breeze in humid July and the dawn sun knocking onthe dark. You all know Dave. You’ve met him before.

As a studio host, there could not be anyone better. Dave is the master facilitator, pointing, showing, telling the way around the musical playground that is Rancho De La Luna. Endlessly generous and enthusiastic. Open to the bone. Of course he’s met them all, recorded them all. Has all the gear and the idea.

But without diminishing any of that history and tech and expertise, Dave is simply just one of the good ones. He cooked Thanksgiving Turkey for us with of the sweet bread trimmings. Drove us out into the national park in his humming Cutlass Supreme. Introduced us to his friends. Made us feel part of the family. Part of the dark side of the valley.

We stayed at Casa Rosa, where everyone stays. The best record collection ever seen. Stacks of killer. A typical day would be get up, find something from the collection, breakfast & coffee. Digital Underground. Lee Hazelwood. Desert Sessions you can’t get. Down to the studio for 10. All the way through, nose to the wheel.

Shoutout to engineer Jon Russo the Righteous for steering the ship non stop. Work until the sun went down then it would be food, finishing touches, maybe some friends would come over then back up to Rosa for mezcal and coyotes. More records. Repeat the cycle. Everlasting love for Dave Catching.

Artists and people that have influenced you?

Dali, Gaudi, Roy Keane & Bruce Lee.

Favorite guitar riff you wish you had composed yourselves?

Sharp Dressed Man // ZZ Top.

In which place or state of mind do you imagine people might listen to your music?

Our music is suitable for any space, enclosed OR exposed. We cater for the bath AND the shower, if anyone disagrees they just haven’t found the right song yet.

If you want cooking music, running music, laid out in the sunning music we got it all at the Avalanche Party general store – step right up and step right in.

Which Superpower would you choose?

Who’s the superhero in the Batman film that just eats fish all day and dances around, the Penguin? I’d do that. Not seen the film.

Thank you!
