In Galarem’s hands, electronica becomes an artful exploration, where every unconventional idm beat and atmosphere serves a profound purpose, beyond mere experimentation. Read our discussion below!
Describe your sound in 3 words
How about eager, dense & volatile. I wish I were a drone artist so I could just say “minimal” and leave it at that. I would feel so cool.
Tell us a few things about Strata. What is the main idea behind it?
I was doing something really specific with the percussion. I wanted the drums to feel less like a series of discrete sounds and more like one, churning thing. I kept thinking of the drum section as this pixelated rendition, aspiring to the condition of / giving form to some deeper, singular, pure sense of movement. It’s a tricky thing to get right. Just me? Ok…
How do you balance the intricate, fast-paced rhythms with the more atmospheric, ambient layers in your music?
I’ve been doing that forever. It’s not like there’s some correct ratio you need to hit, so it’s not really a question of balance to me. It’s more of a parameter you can shift over time for dynamic effect.
Which is your go to synth (analog or digital) when you start a project?
I use Serum a ton, but I often try to do things with it that I don’t think it’s designed for.
Artists and people that have influenced you?
First and foremost is the exact guy you’re probably expecting, if you’re at all familiar with braindance. I think it’d be funny not even to say his name. Beyond that, Autechre will never not blow me away, but they only influence me in the abstract, since I’ve no clue how to actually replicate what they’re doing.
If aliens visit us and ask us what IDM is, which album would you give them to listen to?
Autechre’s Elseq 1-5 is my all time favorite album, if you can call it IDM, or even an album. It’s not even close, either. Genuinely nothing sounds like those guys. Hey, if you’re reading this, seriously, forget about my stuff and go check it out.
If the music of Galarem was a film, which film would that be?
Kontroll. It’s this super atmospheric Hungarian film no one I know seems to have watched. Kind of surreal, deeply moody, full of action, etc.
Are we on a slippery slope towards dystopia?
Toddlers growing up on short form content terrify me so much that I almost (almost!) want to answer with a simple “yes,” but I should refrain from being such an anxious cynic.
Thank you!
