Next stop, The George Tavern, a charming and intimate venue nestled in the heart of London’s East End, and we were there for one reason – Something in the Lake, a band we wholeheartedly love and believe in.
The night kicked off with Portsmouth’s LIPWORMS, a band that skillfully blends rock infused sounds with electronics with less emphasis on the vocal section. They manually synced effects, creating intriguing rhythmic patterns that were atmospheric and trippy, yet carried a great energy. The heavy use of effects, featuring countless pedals, added an experimental touch to their sound while the beauty of their repetitiveness got the crowd swaying.
Taking the stage next was Plutoz Beach, a solo electronic project. During the live performance, the artist seamlessly integrated vocals atop pre-recorded tracks played from her laptop. The prolonged instrumental segments seemed somewhat misplaced, hinting that they might better suit a different setting than a live stage. Nevertheless, Plutoz Beach adeptly combines various styles, delivering a fusion of retro-infused soundscapes, classic vintage sounds, and even more contemporary elements like 2-step beats or even “beatless” tracks.
The headlining act for the night was the band Something in the Lake, a five-piece ensemble that displayed remarkable cohesion, clearly showcasing their well crafted arrangements. The raw and expressive delivery of the vocal tone was distinctive, prompting listeners to forgive minor imperfections. They kicked off their set with “Daylight Robbery,” our personal favourite track from their EP. Staying true to their artistic vision, they included in their setlist the instrumental tracks too. Yet another memorable highlight of the evening was their performance of “Listener,” another gem from their recent EP, featuring an absolutely beautiful, melancholic, melodic riff.
The band’s songwriting is nothing short of magnificent. If falling in love with their music was a possibility through recordings, witnessing them live solidified that affection for a lifetime.
Explore their music, show your support by buying their work, and take pride in being there for them during these early stages of their journey.
