Describe your sound in 3 words

Experimental musical journey

Tell us a few things about Dusky. What is the main idea behind it?

Dusky has emerged from a process of juxtaposing a lot of cool musical ideas and figuring out which ones make the most sense as a unit. The main idea is to have a song that is energetic and has dark undertones without being moody, something that comes across as playfully snarky without using lyrics or taking itself too seriously. We’ve got a bit of everything from Polyphia, Chon, and Tosin Abasi to grunge and heavy metal. Like with all our other songs, we want Dusky to be technically impressive but also catchy and fun to listen to.

You release instrumental music only. Was it an artistic decision to not include any vocal music, or it just happened?

We play instrumental music because that is what we’ve been listening to mainly over the past four or five years. Before that we used to play metal stuff with vocals, and moving on to instrumental music has given us the artistic freedom to make our songs compact and multi-layered with lots of room for different moods and aesthetic textures. It’s also come out of pushing ourselves to improve our technique and phrasing on guitar.

How do you relate to the music scene of India?

We’re pretty far from the ‘mainstream’ or even indie scene in India since most of it is either vocal-driven or film inspired in terms of themes and performance. We’ve always been conscious about not sounding derivative and we want to push the envelope for our listeners and other musicians in India since the sound we are trying to craft doesn’t have a lot of parallels over here that we know of. We’re trying to make space for ourselves in a vibrant scene by bringing in something unique.

Artists and people that have influenced you?

We have a range of individual influences which makes all our songs very different from each other. Chon, Covet, Polyphia, Guthrie Govan, Mateo Mancuso, Animals as Leaders and Nate Smith shine through the most in our music. There’s also hints of Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Periphery in some of our songs.

Favourite guitar riff you wish you had composed yourselves?

Waterslide by Chon and Waves by Guthrie Govan

If the music of Melythm was a film, which film would that be?

It’s hard to put a finger on one film to stand in for all of our music but ‘Dusky’ definitely has Catch Me If You Can vibes. Something about this song just feels very slick and sneaky.

Thank you!
