Describe your sound in 3 words
Unhindered interstellar energy.
Time-bending hip-hop beats and crust funk. How did you approach merging these genres, and what challenges or exciting moments arose during this process? Tell us a few things about Celebrate with Port!
The beauty of the mega cat process is that we don’t think about it. It’s spontaneous, it’s immediate, it’s now. When mega cat gets together, all genres and vibes are on the table. We give ourselves over to whatever we feel in the moment and whatever energy is in the room with us. With “Port,” the energy was a boozy, woozy, side-winding groove that we discovered and held onto for the rest of the composition process.
The description of mega cat as a disembodied multidimensional being with unique effects on those who encounter it is fascinating. How did the idea of mega cat as a concept come about, and how does it influence the band’s creative process?
This music is surprising, even to those of us who make it. It’s not a soloist with support artists. No one person is taking the lead. It is truly a collective of connected people working together to make the coolest thing we know how to make. mega cat is bigger than us; bigger than our egos. Calling it a “disembodied multidimensional being” is simply a mental convenor that indicates the music is bigger than us; larger than our individual consciousness. We are just the conduit for the cat. It flows through us.
What artists and people have influenced you?
There really was no “north star” for mega cat as we were making this record. In retrospect, we realized artists like Budos Band, El Michels Affair, anyone on Daptone Records, Wu Tang Clan, Sault, BADBADNOTGOOD, and Can permeated throughout these tunes in a way we weren’t conscious of at the time.
What is a song you would pay to hear for the first time again?
Any Radiohead song, especially anything off of OK Computer.
If the music of mega cat was a film, which film would that be?
The currently unreleased, David Lynch directed Dune/Terminator/X-Files crossover feature length film.
What isn’t a crime but should be?
Building private equity off of housing in dense urban environments where housing is at a premium. Unbridled wealth.
One thing we should know about you?
We’re just getting started.
Thank you!
