Tell us a few things about Daylight. What is the main idea behind it?
Daylight came about while we were making a live video for our song Blood Orange. Between takes Patch our bassist and Torin our guitarist started jamming some really janky sounding chords, which turned into the basis of the track. At the time we were listening to a lot of Kraut Rock and Trip Hop stuff so we were actively trying to write a song that captured that droney industrial feel. The Lyrics come from our singer Leon’s crazy brain. I think it’s a metaphor for feeling tied up by things out of your control, which is something I think everyone can has felt.
The inspiration behind the song centers on the concept of shedding material possessions and disconnecting from material desires. How did this particular idea shape the lyrical content and overall mood of ‘Daylight’?
I think the lyrical content actually came after the musical content, so the colours and feeling of the music actually drew the lyrics out from Leon. The song is basically about being used by outside forces, be it your own feelings or even other people. That’s a scary thing you know? So naturally the tune took on a dark tone.
Most influential trip hop infused album ever?
For Me it’s Portishead’s Third. That thing is one of the greatest most fucked up albums ever. The production and songwriting is groundbreaking and so bold. The tune Plastic is a highlight for me. That irregular drum loop sounds like what you would probably hear if the devil appeared in front of you haha.
What would you change in the music industry?
A lot hahaha. One thing in particular is that it pressurises a lot of new artists to change what they write to fit a certain style or playlist or whatever. I feel like a lot of artists aren’t making the music that they really want to be making. Don’t get me wrong though, this isn’t a criticism of the artists, the pressure is very real and it’s basically impossible to ignore what the industry demands while making a living. So yeah it’d be nice if that could change at some point.
Do you have an artist that you would describe as a hidden gem that we should know about?
There’s so many hidden gems I could list here. Might have to name a couple coz i cant get it down to just one haha. Our friends Borough Council are a fucking wicked band who you need to go watch. Also Margo Raats has one of the most unbelievable voices you’ll ever hear so go check her out too.
If the music of something in the lake was a film, which film would that be?
I’m not sure, a slightly depressing indie film probably. Something like the lighthouse?
What’s next for you?
Were just looking to keep making tunes and seeing where that takes us. Were also going to play loads more gigs this year, which we’re very excited for.
Thank you!
