Describe your sound in 3 words

Resonance from within

What inspired you to create “Minor Variant” and delve into the theme of time slipping away?

I wrote Minor Variant while reflecting on the effects of Covid-19 on our population as a whole. Millions of people were able to take a moment out of their previously busy lives and ponder what they were doing and why. Simultaneously we all became aware of our mortality and I myself felt that time, a key component of the space-time fabric of our universe always ticks away, steadily and in an unrelenting fashion. Though beautiful it is also melancholic, and inspired the mood of the song.

Are there specific personal experiences or emotions that influenced the creation of this solo bass guitar piece?

While playing and composing the song I felt drawn to rich hues of blue coloration in my mind’s eye which fit with many of the minor chords that I used. Though I don’t have synesthesia, I did feel drawn to that concept, feeling and seeing the sound in a way that moved me.

Artists and people that have influenced you?

I am deeply influenced by the great jazz pianist Bill Evans. I have always found his melodies, chord movement and improvisational voice to be so captivating and beautiful. My hero is the pioneering bassist and composer Michael Manring. His use of multiple bass tunings, chords composed of harmonics and masterful use of rhythm are truly awe inspiring to me. Finally, the great Moto Fukushima has been such an inspiration and guide to me as my bass mentor.

Favorite album of the past 5 years?

Small Moments by Michael Manring, the song Tetrahedron is truly life changing!

If the music of Hari Nandu was a film, which film would that be?

It would probably suit the enigmatic film “Stalker” by Andrei Tarkovsky

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Record all of the songs that you wrote back in the day!

One thing that not many people know about you is…

I have a beer named after me in Boston Massachusetts, it’s quite tasty!

Thank you!
