‘Experimental, introspective, cinematic’ | Interview with Sociedad Síntrica Dodecafónica

What’s that thing called when you meet somebody and you feel like you’re walking on a cloud?
Sociedad Síntrica Dodecafónica is showcasing Walking on a Cloud, a strangely euphoric production with a minimal beat that spreads around like an epidemic. Read our discussion with the talented artist below!

Describe your sound in 3 words

Experimental, introspective, cinematic

Your musical journey has taken you from Barcelona to Madrid, and from the garage revival scene to creating sounds that invite introspection. How has this geographical and artistic evolution influenced the development of Sociedad Síntrica Dodecafónica?

Yeah, I’ve always felt kind of an outcast in that sense… The thing is I’m from Barcelona where in the early 90’s there was this political hardcore punk scene where I grew up but never felt comfortable with… among other reasons because I also liked heavy-prog stuff and you know that’s really incompatible… So when I moved to Madrid in my 20s I found this other garage scene less hidebound and way more fun where I actually fit in but by then I was obsessed with Sonic Youth and started seeking different sounds and meeting new people that led me to jazz, experimental and ambient.

Artists and people that have influenced you?

Sci-fi authors like Arthur C. Clark, Philip K. and Kubrick, George Lucas and Tolkien as a kid… Actually literature and cinema it’s been a huge influence on my music as much as I feel songs are like short movies. From a personal perspective writers like Boris Vian, Eduardo Medoza and Bukowski and painters like Munch or Van Gogh. Musically speaking I could say without a doubt Sonic Youth it’s been my main influence, also Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Tortoise, Nels Cline and Julian Lage as guitarists. And as a producer I admire Massive Attack, Portishead, Bork and some UK 90s Trip Hop.

How does the music scene of Barcelona differ from the one in Madrid? Also what do you love/hate in each city?

I think Barcelona’s music scene at large is much more influenced by politics than Madrid. And Madrid is more fun and open to new people. That’s just what I love most about Madrid that Barcelona hasn’t.

If the music of Sociedad Sintrica Dodecafonica was a film, which film would that be?

I wish it was 2001 a Space Odyssey

Do you have an artist that you would describe as a hidden gem that we should know about?

In the early 2000s there was this jazz-post-rock band from Barcelona called 12Twelve, they released 3 amazing albums. I specially love “Spiritismo”, those are on Spotify thank god…

A song you are secretly obsessed with?

These days I can’t stop playing Doja Cat’s “Paint The Town Red”…

What is the story behind your name?

It was the WI-Fi name of a yoga association under my house, I just added “Dodecafonica” (twelve tone)

Thank you!
