FORDWICH is presenting “User Friendly” from their upcoming first EP called “DOVELAND.” This single is characterised by its really warm and wet organic beat accompanied by ethereal synth pads. Read our discussion below!
Tell us a few things about your debut EP, DOVELAND. What is the main idea behind it?
DOVELAND is the first batch of music I made after deciding to switch gears creatively. I was producing for more established artists, leaning toward hip-hop, pop and alternative R&B and I was finding it less and less inspiring each day. The title of the EP comes from the internet conspiracy surrounding the town in Wisconsin, USA that mysteriously vanished in the 80’s or 90s. I love all things weird and mysterious
Are there any particular reasons or messages behind your decision to keep your identity hidden?
I simply wanted to make a clean break from my past and not have any of my previous work color this project.
Would it be safe to list Burial as one of your main influences? What are the people/artists that have inspired you?
I definitely love Burial, he’s an influence no doubt. But I also love 90s hip-hop and trip-hop. Radiohead has also been a constant influence yet I think above all, the album Charcoal by Brambles is what I return to most. So beautiful and textured.
Which is your go to synth (analog or digital) when you start a new project?
I usually switch it up fairly regularly. For the DOVELAND EP I was using a Kontakt library called Tapes.01 by The Phonoloop a lot. I also started to dabble with Serum and I nearly always throw some hardware Juno60 in somewhere.
If the music of FORDWICH was a film, which film would that be?
It would be an original, unreleased film, shot in the style of found footage, about a group of children who happen upon a portal while playing in the woods. Other than that I don’t want to offer any more spoilers! 😉
What isn’t a crime but should be?
We should definitely have a mechanism to punish politicians for waisting our tax dollars
What is the story behind your name?
Fordwich is the name of a tiny town in Ontario that I’ve driven through or near many times and I always thought it would make a cool band or artist name. To my surprise, is wasn’t already taken. Most names are always taken by now. I couldn’t find any artists using it so I snatched it up!
