‘Fleshy safe cocoon’ | Interview with Socha

I make soft songs about hard feelings.
Socha presents her new work, THE WAVE, a tremendously cinematic composition featuring dystopic synth arpeggios and evocative emotional vibes. Read our discussion below!

Describe your sound in 3 words

Fleshy safe cocoon

Your new work, “THE WAVE,” feels like a two-part project. What does each part represent? Can you share a few details about it?

I don’t typically go into writing a song with a plan, and often find that they tend to reveal themselves over time rather than me trying to force a narrative or theme. The meaning of this song has definitely changed as well since I started workin on it. Currently, I view the two parts as a representation of the caterpillar and cocoon stage. The beginning feels intimate and bittersweet to me. The lines “I have consumed all the matter that I can, I have pursued all that matters for a man, what’s left is what was there when I began: something soft and sad” to me really sum it up. The character has distracted herself with all of these external things, only to realize that she must turn inward to move onto the next part of her journey. Then in part 2 she realizes that the next phase is filled with a lot of pain, confusion, and a lot of shadow sides coming to the surface.

Favourite synth arpeggio you wish you had composed yourself?

The one in the song “Time Adventure” from the Adventure Time soundtrack.

Artists and people that have influenced you?

James Blake, FKA twigs, Gorillas, Mitski, Adventure Time, Ram Dass

If THE WAVE was a film, which film would that be?

Oooo, honestly I have seen so few films this is a tricky one for me. Maybe James and The Giant Peach?

Are we on a slippery slope towards dystopia?

Hmmm, I think we’re probably already there from some perspectives. Dystopia is a funny concept outside of fiction because it implies that there is a possible “utopia,” and I’m not sure that I believe that.

What isn’t a crime but should be?

This one is tough because I don’t really believe in the typical crime/punishment system we have BUT I do wish more cities had infrastructure in place that allowed us to be more mindful with our consumption (plastic especially) and the way we dispose of the things we consume.

A song you are convinced was written about you?

“Don’t Miss It” by James Blake

Thank you!
