Tell us a few things about Raised By She-Wolves. What is the story behind it?
Raised By She-Wolves is a tale both mysterious and enchanting. ‘Tis an odyssey forged amidst the wilderness of sound. The story behind it is steeped in mystique and shadow, much like the legends of old. It speaks of a child in the wilderness, nurtured and raised by the noble and fierce she-wolves of the forest. Their loving embrace bestowed upon the child extraordinary resilience, strength, and an unyielding spirit. As the child grows, the story unfolds, revealing a journey of a man battling his demons and pride.
What aspects or experiences in your life contribute to the vulnerability and emotional depth expressed in your music?
Ah, the vulnerability and emotional depth within my music stem from the experiences that have shaped my noble existence. Like any mortal, I have traversed the treacherous landscapes of joy and sorrow, love and loss. Moreover, the connections forged and lost on my journey have added layers of emotional depth to my compositions. The bittersweet farewells, the longing for familiar faces, and the search for a sense of belonging have resonated within me, stirring the depths of my soul.
Artists and people that have influenced you?
There exists a tale whispered in hushed tones, known only as ‘The Hailstone King.’ Its impact upon my artistic endeavours is profound. This story follows the journey of a sovereign, whose ascent to power is entangled with the delicate threads of his mental well-being. Yet, I shall keep the details veiled, for this tale holds secrets that dance between realms of reality and imagination.
Additionally, the presence of the Black Dog, a metaphorical embodiment of melancholy and the struggles of the human psyche, has left an indelible impression on my creative pursuits. This metaphorical creature, symbolic of the trials and tribulations we all face, has inspired me to explore the depths of the human condition, delving into the realms of sorrow, introspection, and ultimately, hope. The Black Dog’s shadowy presence has propelled me to delve into the emotional nuances of my art, giving voice to the raw and vulnerable aspects of the human experience.
Moreover, I am fortunate to be surrounded by a circle of adoring friends, whose unwavering support and shared artistic vision have influenced my creative journey. These kindred souls have become my confidants, my muses, and my pillars of strength. Through their unique perspectives and talents, they have challenged and encouraged me to explore new artistic territories, breaking the barriers of convention and venturing into uncharted realms of expression. Their unwavering camaraderie and collaboration have emboldened me to push the boundaries of my craft and to cultivate my artistic voice.
What would you change in the music industry?
Foremost, fairness in payment to creators is a noble pursuit that deserves our unwavering attention. In this age of subscriptions and unlimited access, it is essential that we ensure creators are duly compensated for their artistic contributions. Rather than a model that places emphasis solely on subscriptions, let us devise a system where fair payment is based on the use and consumption of their works. This will not only recognise the value of their creations but also encourage a thriving ecosystem where artists can sustain themselves through their craft.
Beyond the confines of the music industry itself, I recognise the need for societal change that can foster better access for those from less-privileged backgrounds. The artistry of music knows no boundaries, and it is our duty to dismantle the societal barriers that hinder aspiring talents from marginalised communities. A more equitable society, achieved through the redistribution of wealth and resources, will provide opportunities for individuals from all walks of life to pursue their musical aspirations.
Furthermore, the appreciation for longer-form projects should be rekindled within the music industry.
In our fast-paced world, where attention spans may falter, it is vital to nurture an environment that values the depth and intricacy of lengthier musical endeavours. These grand compositions, be they symphonies, concept albums, or epic ballads, require dedication, skill, and an investment of time. By placing greater value on these longer-form projects, we can celebrate the artistic vision and craftsmanship that go into creating these enduring masterpieces.
If the music of Gabriel Gifford was a book, which book would that be?
If Gabriel Gifford’s music were to manifest as a book, it would embody the essence of ‘The Hailstone King’. Just as the music weaves a rich tapestry of emotions, resonating with the depths of the human soul, the chosen tale would transport readers into a realm where mystery and introspection reign supreme. It would invite them to explore the complexities of the human condition, traversing the realms of triumph and tragedy, of joy and sorrow, much like the melodies that dance within the air.
Let me share an excerpt with you:
“The boy’s sisters, mothers, and grandmothers raised him with immeasurable love, knowledge, and forgiveness. Unaware their selflessness would be thanked with disdain. The royal bit the hands that fed him. Soon the generous offerings would dwindle in the face of his growing appetite and ego. In contempt and avoidance of his duties, the young King pursued hedonism. The crown continued to hold imbalance and entitlement.
Years later, the King would become an insomniac, he slept only when there was beauty outside. The secluded pit where he came to dwell would seem unfit for purpose (a waning concept). All that remained in his icy cavern was the husk of his crown and two dozen frozen snails.
Through the cavern, a bitter mist would often roll in by the tonne. Frozen voices of the Kingdom roused him, swirling through his skull. With them joined dark spirits from afar. Spirits so putrid, they’d worm fear and anxieties into one’s every day tasks. He thought of his children, his past riches, but could not bear to return to them. Did his kin see sovereignty, or just a man and his dog? After all, a dog is just a wolf that man befriended. The promise of ice made him rue the days of the fen. Begrudgery moor.”
Or perhaps, the great Martin Newell’s epic poem ‘Black Shuck’. A tale of a spectral entity that prowls the shadowed lands, a beast of darkness and mystery. It is said to be a large, ominous black dog with glowing red eyes that pierce the night. Its appearance is both fearsome and awe-inspiring, striking dread into the hearts of those who encounter it.
This creature is steeped in folklore and superstition, with tales that date back through the ages. It is whispered that Black Shuck is a harbinger of doom, an omen of impending misfortune or tragedy. Crossing paths with this spectral hound is said to bring ill fate upon the beholder.Throughout the countryside, stories are told of Black Shuck’s eerie presence, haunting lonely moors, mist-shrouded forests, and desolate crossroads. It is a creature that commands respect and inspires fear, its origins lost in the mists of time.
One last thing we should know about you?
Indeed, there is one last thing you should know about me, but fear not, for all shall be revealed in due time. Just as the turning of the seasons brings forth the blooming of flowers and the harvest of crops, so too shall the layers of my persona unfold before your eyes.
In this realm of uncertainties and hidden truths, I embrace the mystique that shrouds my existence. It is in the whispers carried by the wind and the secrets whispered in the hallowed corridors of the castle that my true nature resides. Like the moon casting its enigmatic glow upon the land, I shall reveal myself gradually.
Thank you!
