Life isn’t always a song
But you dance
Australian chart-topping and ARIA-award winning act Boy & Bear presents “Strange World,” a production distinguished by its ethereal atmospheric pads, nostalgic vintage tones, and profoundly melancholic songwriting techniques. A song that speaks straight to your heart. Read our discussion below!
Describe your sound in 3 words
Happy/Sad/Warm
The band has achieved chart-topping success with previous albums. How does the new album build upon your earlier works while also exploring adventurous beginnings and creative turning points?
Every album we do is another step along the creative journey. There are some elements in the vocals, groove and melodic side to what we do that have stayed with us from the start and as such they tip the cap to the early work. At the same time we are curious about new sounds and exploring creatively. So I hope this album shows that.
Could you tell us more about the concept and themes explored in the album’s lyrics? How do they reflect the band’s growth and experiences over the past years?
The lyrics on this record deal with lots of things. Everything from loneliness to fulfilment, from emptiness to hope. From feelings of anxiety to euphoria. In most of our worlds there are both positives and less positive things coexisting. I think the lyrics on the album reflect that sentiment.
With the release of your self-titled album, what can fans expect from your upcoming Australian tour, supported by Boo Seeka? Any hints about the setlist or special surprises in store for the live performances?
We are really looking forward to this tour. It is the biggest set list revamp we have undertaken in our whole career. People will hear things from as far back as our EP. It should be a lot of fun.
If the music of Boy & Bear was a film, which film would that be?
The film doesn’t exist. It would be something that was kind of like the Secret Life of Walter Mitty, The Life Aquatic and Lost in Translation. Maybe it should be called ‘The Secret life in Translation’. You heard it here first.
Favourite album of the past year?
First Two pages of Frankenstein – The National
What would be the tagline to the sitcom of your life?
“Standing by to Stand by”
Do you have an artist/band that you would describe as a hidden gem that we should know about?
Denison Witmer. He is signed to Asthmatic Kitty (Sufjan’s label) and is so incredible. Every album. Maybe people should start with His ‘Little Flowers’ record
Thank you!
