Those small things..the ethereal synth arpeggios, the unconventional rhythm structures, the graceful string sounds..they do sound so right. Read our discussion below!
Describe your sound in 3 words
Boundless, distinctive, immersive
Tell us a few things about Sounds So Wrong. What is the main idea behind it?
To be completely honest, the main idea was that we booked the studio, and we created a deadline. Because of this approach, the writing and recording phase of this album was a departure from our debut and sophomore records. In fact, some songs weren’t even fully formed when we entered the studio. What made it truly unique was the equal collaboration between Samy and Can in terms of composition. This can be heard easily in tunes such as Now is the Moment or Somewhere Beneath. It was a refreshing change from our previous albums. Though it presented its fair share of challenges, we absolutely adored the final result. “Sounds So Wrong” beautifully encapsulates the production period of the album. The sound we achieved truly resonated with us, and we are pretty happy how it turned out.
You blend numerous different styles. What is your musical background and your main influences?
Our musical background and influences are incredibly diverse, spanning various genres. While rock, jazz, and metal have played significant roles, our scope extends far beyond them. We’re deeply inspired by Anatolian and Eastern European melodies, which find their way into nearly every song in our repertoire. We like surprises, thus blending the colours of different worlds, this is part of us, this is what we are.
If aliens visit us and ask us what progressive rock music is, which album would you give them to listen to?
Any album by Frank Zappa!
How do you relate to the music scene of Grenoble and of France in general?
Seems like we don’t quite fit into the music scene in France as much as we would have liked, mostly due to our genre and somewhat “complex”. Maybe our genre is just a hair too “complex” for their liking. But let’s give credit where credit’s due: there are nevertheless some die-hard fans right here in France who appreciate our music. A big shout-out to all of you amazing folks for standing by us!
But truth be told, our real fanbase stretches far beyond the borders of France. Our listeners hail from all corners of the world, from the mighty US and the UK to the rock-loving Germans and the free-spirited Dutch. It’s like we’ve got a musical army spanning continents. So, while we may not be the typical French flavor, we’re carving our own path and winning hearts across the globe. To all our international fans, this one’s for you. Keep rocking, keep spreading the word, and let’s show the world that music knows no boundaries.
Do you have an artist that you would describe as a hidden gem that we should know about?
Shora could be a good answer. Also, ARH from Grenoble can easily be seen as a hidden gem for math/extreme rock fans.
If the music of Bend the Future was a film, which film would that be?
The Lobster
What is the story behind your name?
Oh, let’s rewind to the early days when we were rocking a different name – “RF Cavities.” Yeah, it just didn’t quite hit the right notes for us. Then we found ourselves searching for a name thath can embody our style and capture our progressive nature. Finally, the answer came from an old writing pad, some lyrics for another project in Turkish which translated beautifully to Bend the Future, and we loved it! Now, “Bend the Future” perfectly encapsulates our essence, marking our tempo changes and symbolizing the sonic journey we’re here to embark upon. It’s a name that carries the weight of our ambitions and the promise of a musical revolution.
Thank you!
